Purpose

The goal of this assignment is to practice creating an Excel document and using the built-in calculations tool.

How much does it cost?

You may think that taking a few Post-It® Notes for personal use or arriving to work a few minutes late doesn’t matter. This assignment uses Microsoft®Excel (or Google Sheets) to create a spreadsheet of how much a company loses each day/year to theft.

Before you begin this assignment, I strongly recommend you take this refresher course on Microsoft®Excel. (Links to an external site.)

Once you have looked through the training videos and are ready to proceed, begin by creating a new Microsoft®Excel workbook.

Instructions

Using Microsoft®Excel, create a spreadsheet utilizing the information in the scenarios below.

  1. Add a Title to your spreadsheet for your fictitious company and a subtitle identifying the information you are displaying.
  2. Add appropriate columns to your spreadsheet and add a heading to each column.
  3. Add borders to your columns and rows for clarity, if desired.
  4. Incorporate the information below into that spreadsheet.
  5. Using the Excel calculation tools, determine how much employee theft costs your fictitious company of 30 employees over the course of one week.
    To determine the formula for each calculation, think about how many people are involved, the number of items/time involved and the cost per item/time. For example, the formula calculating the total amount for the first scenario below would be [=3*2*0.67] meaning three workers each taking two packs costing $0.67 each.
  6. Add another column and perform calculations to see how much employee theft costs a fictitious company of 30 employees over the course of one year.
  7. How does this information effect your opinion about the impact of employee pilfering? Include a short explanation below your spreadsheet information.

Here’s an example:

Three employees play computer games for a total of 4 hours each, at a cost of $10/hour.

One employee sends three personal packages at the company’s expense, at a cost of $7, $4.50, and $12.

One worker makes 300 personal copies on the company photocopier, at a cost of $.05/copy.

Three workers call in sick for one 8-hour day when they are healthy, at a cost of $10/hour.

Ten workers spend one hour each sending personal emails, at a cost of $10/hour.
